February 18th, 2010 Guest Speaker will be Phil Moy

Phil Moy, Fisheries and Aquatic Invasive Species Outreach Specialist of
UW Sea Grant will be the guest speaker for the February 18th, 2010 meeting of the Northeastern Wisconsin Great Lakes Sport Fishing organization.

There has been a lot of press recently on Asian carp and their
proximity to Lake Michigan as well as about new techniques that can
detect Asian carp genetic material in the water. This presentation will
consider:
*      Asian carp biology
*      How the fish may have moved beyond the electric barriers
*      What the discovery of Asian carp DNA near the lake means
*      The potential for Asian carp to become established in the Great
Lakes
*      What should be the next steps to prevent the spread of aquatic
invasive species via the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.

About the Presenter: Phil Moy has been the Fisheries and Nonindigenous
Species Specialist for the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute

Our First Speaker in April is Mike Steffes owner and president of Warrior Lures who has spent the over 25 years in the tackle manufacturing business, 20 years with Big Jon Inc and 8 years with Fishlander. Now he is on his own with his new company called Warrior Lures.  Warrior Lures is making something for the diehard salmon guys and they are also making walleye lures along with crawler harness blades. All products are made in the USA.  They do all their own painting in house, with quality being their number one mission.  Warrior Lures is based in Traverse City Michigan.  Mike has been a strong supporter of NEWGLSF over the years and he is happy to finally get over to this side of the lake to meet with us.  Mike will be selling spoons that night and will also be donating some tackle for a second raffle.  He will be setting up at 6:30 to talk to fishermen and introduce you to his product lines.  For those of you who fish walleyes, Mike is also bringing some of his walleye tackle along.

Steve Hogler, Fisheries Biologist for the Wisconsin DNR will share data from the Lake Michigan 2009 creel survey. Steve will share the most current data concerning different fish specie populations in Lake Michigan. Information gathered in these surveys helps the DNR plan for future fish stocking in Lake Michigan
